Report From Richmond
By Roz Walls

Richmond is very busy, the first Resilience Kids begins in May with 2 more in planning for 8-12 year olds and one group for adolescence. Further plans for the next year are to have one community education forum on mental health, parent support and education groups, one family dinner a month for fun and a Super Saturday Club. I have also been working directly with 6 families who fell between the service cracks and facilitating a family approach and connecting them to services that work from this lens. All of these came out of recommendations from the parents at the three Focus groups we held in November 2008.The community group and I are working on means of developing a means of tracking families in Richmond if anyone has any tools they would share. Presentations to both professional and community groups are on going and presently hectic as the focus is to keep the community informed on what support services will be developed over the next year and how to access them.

By March 2010 the Supporting Families will become a permanent part of Susan Rechel’s position as Housing and Community Development Manager with Richmond Mental Health. I am delighted as Susan, over the past year has been very active in Supporting Families with Parental Mental Illness and a strong voice of support for families and community. Over the next year Susan and I plan to work closely to build a foundation to insure services.

Richmond is moving forward due to the strong supportive community who believe in Supporting Families in both words and action and good collaboration between MCFD, Coastal Health, the schools, the families and community.

Thanks Roz Walls, Richmond Supporting Families with Parental Mental Illness.
